~ Hostage Rescue ~
Hostage Rescue puts a morbid spin on the "Capture the Flag" style of game. A Hostage Rescue game sees the Terrorists controlling a quantity of hostages, who stand still until rescued. Once rescued, a hostage must be led to one of several extraction points, while Counter-Terrorists battle to regain control of the hostage. If the Counter-Terrorist escorting a hostage is killed, that hostage comes back into play; if the hostage is successfully led to extraction, the Counter-Terrorists gain a point. The game is over when all Terrorists are killed or all hostages rescued, signaling a win for Counter-Terrorists; or when the time limit expires with hostages still in play, in which case Terrorists win the game.

~Bomb Defuse ~

Bomb Defuse mode places one bomb in play, under the control of a secretly and randomly assigned Terrorist. The goal of the Terrorists is to get the bomb to a detonation point, set the explosive, and wait for detonation. When the Terrorist carrying the bomb is killed, the bomb remains on the battlefield until picked up by another Terrorist. The goal of the Counter-Terrorists is to continually apprehend the Terrorist carrying the bomb, or defuse the bomb before it can be detonated. Defusing time can be decreased with the purchase of a defusing kit before the game begins; however, this limits the power of weapons that can be purchased for in-game use. A Bomb Defuse game is over when a bomb is either detonated or defused, or if all Terrorists are killed.

~ Assassination ~

An Assassination game sees one Counter-Terrorist secretly assigned the title of VIP. The VIP is given extra armor and the goal of reaching the escape point. The goal for the Terrorists is to kill the VIP, but since they do not know which player this is, reconnaissance or a scorched-earth policy must be employed to successfully terminate this player. The goal of all Counter-Terrorists is to ensure the VIP reaches the extraction point before time runs out. The game end when the VIP either reaches the extraction point (Counter-Terrorists win) or is killed (Terrorists win.)

~ Cheating ~

Cheating is a problem with most computer games, and "Counter-Strike" is no exception. A fundamental rule of the games servers is that no player may cheat by hacking into the games programs and changing the game parameters. By hacking into the game code and altering it, a player can make his individual avatar invincible in the game, or never run out of ammunition, making that player have a distinct advantage over other players. When an administrator suspects a cheater, he will ban that cheater.
